Out of one, many

Antonin Gregory Scalia was an only child. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 11, 1936, the time is unknown, so we had to rectify this one.  After fully reviewing his career, we decided upon an Ascendant of  25 Libra 40 for the Judge.

His father, Salvatore Eugene Scalia, (his eldest son Eugene is named for him)  emigrated from Sicily as a teenager and came through Ellis Island. Pere Scalia received his bachelor’s degree from New Jersey’s Rutger’s University and his doctor of philosophy at Columbia University. He was an exchange fellow to the University of Florence in Italy and later joined the faculty of Brooklyn College where he taught romance languages. He retired in 1969 and reposed seventeen years later in 1986.

His mother, Catherine Louisa Panaro,  on the other hand, was a first generation Italian-American who worked as an elementary school teacher until Antonin was born. She died two weeks before her husband on Christmas Eve.

Early in life, he acquired the nickname “Nino,”  in remembrance of his grandfather, for whom he was named but also because he was the only son —  it translates roughly to “Sonny.”

Growing up

Scalia grew up in an what was then an Italian-Irish  borough of Queens. He attended a public elementary school where he was a straight A student and then  went to pricey Xavier High School in Manhattan. Rrun by Xavierian Brothers of the Roman Catholic Church,  Xavier is located  in the tony Chelsea . While there he continued to receive high academic marks and finished first in his class.

In 1953, Scalia enrolled at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., this one run by the Jesuits. Here e he graduated valedictorian and summa cum laude with a bachelors degree in history in 1957. Harvard Law School was next. . During his final year he met Maureen McCarthy, an undergraduate at Radcliffe College. They were married on September 10, 1960.

After a stellar judicial career including a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Judge Scalia  was sworn into the high court in September 1986,  98-0.

Scalia’s Benevolence

Judge Scalia has a 26 Libra Ascendant, a degree of “benevolence” is a critical degree in the zodiac and gives the native “peculiar mental quirks” and idiosyncrasies. Microbiologist, the great Louis Pasteur also has this Ascendant, and makes the natives want to be of service to others.

The Sabian Symbol suggests “An eagle and a dove”  highlighting his need to harmonize the secularism of his Splash temperament type with his faith, which  may explain why he was not a “dependable conservative” but nonetheless strict in  adhering to the doctrine of Original Intent.

Libra ascendants are often thin in youth, but tend towards stoutness at they ages.  Scalia is typical:   round face, double chin and good-looking.  They also tend  be cheerful and genial, evidenced by his friendship with Judge Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, whom he enjoyed mental jousting, teasing & play.

The Judge’s ascendant is also encouraged by his surplus of Water signs in his chart, including his Part of Fortune at 14 Pisces that has the symbol of a “Family Tree” suggesting his ability to interweave discordant socio-politico relationships into a happy whole.

Jones Lines

His Line of Vitality, that aspect between the Sun and Moon, is inconjunct, giving a tendency to spend his talents on mutable issues: people, arts, leisure because of his need to throw off excessive mental energy.  This is accentuated by the only conjunction in his chart in the Piscean fifth house of pleasure seeking and children.

His Line of Personality are squared, giving him impetus to see beyond the individual in  individual court cases and view the underlying social currents particularly as Saturn, the stronger of the two planets,  is in the fifth house while Jupiter is in the second house of environmental resources.

His Line of Efficiency is happily sextiled, with the Part of Fortune partile his Saturn, at 18 Pisces 08 exuberantly sharing his talents in the “gigantic tent” of humankind, and ensuring even his play (they are all in the fifth house) is structured towards that overall goal.

Finally his Line of Culture is not aspected.  Overall, his chart shows that the late judge led a happy, though a bit over indulgent, life; but we knew that.  R.I.P. Justice Scalia.
