Despite their twenty-one-year age difference, they married after her graduation. Because the both parents were students of anthropology, the family often made many field trips for their work. Originally Mrs. Kroeber documented the trip for further study and publications, but eventually she began to specialize on her own in several Native Californian cultures.

Going her own way

Being so immersed in anthropology, Ursula decided to go a different route and instead studied French and Renaissance languages and literature at Radcliffe College 1 Until 1999, Radcliffe College was the all-female counterpart of the all male Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts. . She continued her studies in Renaissance literature at Columbia University in New York City for her Masters of Arts in French and Italian literature and her doctorate too, winning the prestigious Fulbright scholarship to continue her studies aboard in Paris for one year.

That was fortuitous, for like her mother before, while traveling to Paris, she met a fellow academic, French historian Charles LeGuin aboard the Queen Mary in 1953. They had a whirlwind romance, marrying shortly after debarking in Paris. The couple returned to America and had three children, Elisabeth (1957), Caroline (1959) before moving to Portland in 1959 for Charles’s teaching position at Portland State. Son Theodore arrived a few years later (1964).

Map of Ursula

Mrs. LeGuin is a bucket with an Uranus handle. Her ascendant is 20 Sagittarius, a degree of “preparation” for it shows the pond has been frozen for weeks and now people are at working cutting out the summer ice. This rising is in keeping of her philosophy of showing the next phase of human life, while opposition of Uranus to Mercury in Libra and the preponderance is there, is how she dissolves the archaic beliefs that what is hear now, will always be.

While it seems that she has a strong rim opposition from Saturn to Jupiter, the line of motivation, it is actually too wide, thus making the planets on the left infuse her eccentricity with a dream like quality. On the right, is the knowledge of the harshness of Saturn and indeed her best books showed these two qualities often battling one another that first showed up in her debut novel, the Dispossessed where the rigid, anarchist Anarres, battle the wealthy but hierarchical Urras that is poignantly Urras’s moon.
