Prince Alfred was 24 when died. His sister, Marie of Roumania #646 on the Jones 1000, wrote that his health broke down while the Times of London said that Prince Alfred’s death was due to a tumor, but it seems clear that as The Complete Peerage states, he shot himself and was a suicide.
He was born October 15, 1874 at 2:45 am in Buckingham, Palace and like his cousin Prince Albert Victor #16 had a dissipated lifestyle carousing London’s seedier parts.

Prince Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Alfred Alexander William Ernest Albert), was the eldest child of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, the only daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. He had four younger sisters:
- Princess Marie (1875-1938) – married King Ferdinand of Romania
- Princess Victoria Melita (1876-1936) – married twice. First time ended in divorce.
- Princess Alexandra (1878-1942) – married Ernst II, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg,
- Princess Beatrice (1884-1966) – married Infante Alfonso of Spain, Duke of Galliera,
The Prince of Edinburgh was a see-saw temperament type. His ascendant is 12.05 Virgo or the Hyperion symbol of an “emblazoned coat of arms with with lightning and fast” heralding his love of adornment and how much of his life was superficial.
